The Photographs of August Sander
AUSTRALIA SYDNEY • Art Gallery of New South Wales • Ongoing |
 |
This exhibition of 158 photographs, being shown in Sydney only, acknowledges August Sander's interest in typologies and his aim to produce a definitive 'atlas' of the German people. Sander (1876 – 1964), who worked early in the 20th century, photographed anonymous people dressed in wrok clothing, thern divided the images into seven archetypal groups such as "The Farmer" and "The Woman", to reveal their subjects' social roles. Also included are Sander's photographs of the landscape surrounding Cologne, and of the interior of his home and studio.
