Staff Report NEW YORK, PARIS, 16 NOVEMBER 2007 The National Book Foundation announced the 2007 winners of its prestigious National Book Awards on 14 November during a black-tie ceremony at Manhattans Marriott Marquis Hotel. The winning authors are: Fiction: Denis Johnson, Tree of Smoke (Farrar, Straus & Giroux) Nonfiction: Tim Weiner, Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA (Doubleday) Poetry: Robert Hass, Time and Materials, (Ecco: HarperCollins) Young Peoples Literature: Sherman Alexie, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (Little, Brown & Company) Meanwhile, in Paris, the winning authors of France's most coveted Prix Littéraires (literary awards) 2007 were also announced. The prizes and winners are: Prix Goncourt (5 November): Gilles Leroy for Alabama Song (Mercure de France) Prix Renaudot (5 November): Daniel Pennac for Chagrin d'école (Gallimard) Prix Femina (12 November): Eric Fottorino for Baisers de
cinéma (Gallimard) Grand Prix du Roman de l'Académie Française 2007 (25 October): Vassilis Alexakis for his novel Ap. J.-C (Stock) Prix Médicis (12 November): Jean Hatzfeld for La stratégie des antilopes (Seuil) The Deutscher Buchpreis (German Book Prize) 2007 was awarded at the opening of the Frankfurt Book Fair (8 October) to the 37-year-old East German writer Julia Franck for her novel Die Mittagsfrau. Nobel Prize in Literature 2007: Doris Lessing, the 87-year-old British writer, was named the 2007 Nobel Laureate in Literature by the Swedish Academy in Stockholm on 11 October.
