Our Future: The Guy & Myriam Ullens Foundation Collection
BEIJING  •  Ullens Center for Contemporary Art  •  19 July - 12 October 2008

Presented to coincide with the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Our Future: The Guy & Myriam Ullens Foundation Collection aims to  tell the story of Guy and Myriam Ullens’ long-term commitment to Chinese artists and their work.

As well as displaying highlights from the Ullens Collection, Our Future includes new acquisitions, commissions and a selection of historic works that explore how artists are developing ongoing critical responses to the coexistence of many diverse experiences in China, such as the mass media’s blurring of reality, fantasy, expectation and history.

Fire His Breath, Jade His Bones: New Work by Shi Jinsong
BEIJING  •  Platform China  •  26 July - 24 August 2008

The exhibition contains three works - two are related to fire and one uses jade. One of the “fire” works is a burning piece of charcoal made from an enormous tree trunk; the other is an exposed car engine with a stainless steel exhaust system that turns red following periodic explosions. Because of the shortage of appropriate terminology we may call them installations, but both works are far from “readymade,” resulting instead from carefully planned transformation of natural materials and utilitarian objects. The third work in the exhibition is a tiny jade human head set on a stainless steel base upstairs. Motorized by a mechanism it strikes the wall at the rate of 16 times per minute. Its “cool” material and monotonous, repetitive action contrast dramatically with the two “fire” works displayed downstairs.

These works all allude to violence and danger, but of different forms and cultural connotations. They impress people with a penchant for danger as well as for technological precision---a characteristic of Shi Jinsong’s art.

Li Zhanyang: 'Rent' - Rent Collection Yard
BEIJING  •  Galerie Urs Meile  •  26 April - 24 August 2008

'Rent' - Rent Collection Yard (2007) is the title of the largest and most complex sculptural installation Li Zhanyang (born 1969, Jilin Province, China) has ever created. Taking eighteen months of production after nearly a decade of conceptual incubation, Li Zhanyang's 'Rent' - Rent Collection Yard is a humorous and subjective look at the Chinese contemporary art scene. It is informed by the artist's personal experience. Characters, both local and international, are brought to life. The 34 life-size coloured fiberglass figures of this installation are modeled after the likeness of various people familiar to the artist - among them international celebrities as well as some only known in Chinese contemporary art circles. Following six conceptual themes (Paying Rent, Foot Washing, Raping, Oppressing, Dying a Martyr, and History Observed), the sculptures are spread throughout three exhibition spaces of Galerie Urs Meile in Beijing.

Unmoved: Ilya Kabakov, Sabrina Mezzaqui, Hans Op de Beeck
BEIJING  •  Galleria Continua  •  12 July - 24 August 2008

In the main exhibition space, three works by Sun Yuan and Peng Yu take place. The shock value that thirteen elderly people in wheelchairs have on the viewer is undeniably intense. The “Retirement home” is the piece that first inspired the artistic exploration that formed this exhibition. A massive trash bin keeps crashing against the walls of the retirement home. The parody of Ilya Kabakov’s work gets less softly narrated and much crueller in Sun Yuan and Pengyu representation, where the viewer is still not spared any feelings of pain or discomfort. Thus, once again Sun Yuan and Peng Yu annihilate the barrier between art and public, effectively forcing the audience to become physically and emotionally involved in the work.

On the second floor, time has slowed down until it almost stops. An extremely reserved and meditative artist, Sabrina Mezzaqui presents her solitary video works focusing her attention on the most minute and sensitive things in life.
Ilya Kabakov’s representation of modern society is “frozen” on the wall; nothing apparently moves.
