The Daily News Golden Gloves is the oldest and largest amateur boxing tournament in the world. Since 1927, hundreds of amateur boxers from across the New York metropolitan area have fought their way to Madison Square Garden for a chance to win a Daily News Golden Gloves championship.
The 81st Annual Daily News Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament kicked off in January. This year, more than 1,000 amateur boxing hopefuls signed up for consideration — up from around 600 last year. Organizers say this is the highest turnout for the world's oldest amateur boxing tournament since the 1970s.
The Daily News Golden Gloves is perhaps best known as the launching pad for many professional pugilists, including world champions Emile Griffith, Jose Torres, Floyd Patterson, Howard Davis, Riddick Bowe, Mark Breland, Zab Judah, three-time world women's lightweight champ Alicia Ashley, and Melissa Salamone.
Boxing champs Ali, Frazier, Holmes, Holyfield, Lewis, Duran, Ray Leonard, Jones Jr. and Mosley have all fought in the world's most famous ring.
