Presumably to stimulate the market for Korean contemporary art, largely unknown outside of Seoul, the Korean Eye Moon Generation Exhibition and Auction has brought together a group of leading Korean contemporary artists and galleries to create the first international exhibition and sale of Korean contemporary art.

The exhibition previews this month in Seoul (18 – 23 May 2009) at the Standard Chartered First Bank with a selection of approximately 30 works. Korean Eye: Moon Generation, curated by Lee Daehyung, then travels to London to the Phillips de Pury & Company’s space at Howick Place and the Saatchi Gallery (20 June – 5 July). Additional works from the artists will be sold in the Phillips de Pury & Company Contemporary Art sales in July.

Participating Korean artists:

Ayoung Kim, Bahk SeonGhi, Boomoon, Cho Hoon, Choi TaeHoon, Choo JongWan, Debbie Han, Han KiChang, Hong KyongTack, Jang SeungHyo, Jeon Junho, Kang Hyung Koo, Kim Inbai, Kim Joon, Koh MyungKeun, Kwon KiSoo, Lee Dongwook, Lee HyungKoo, Lee LeeNam, Lee Rim, Lee Ufan, Lee Yong Baek, Lee YongDeok, Park JungHyuk, Park SeungMo, Park SungTae, SeungMin Lee, Sim SeungWook, Whang Inkie, Yi HwanKwon, Yoon Jong Seok

An art website and reference archive of Korean artworks and artists is currently under construction at (KoreanEye.org).

Hyungkoo Lee, for example, approaches his work from a scientifc perspective creating playful yet realistic reconstructions of skeletons resembling familiar cartoon characters. The works begin as drawings that are reminiscent of classical natural studies and culminate as anthropomorphic skeletal sculptures.
