The exhibition presents, for the first time in Austria, the works of 15 self-taught artists from Japan. These artists, who live on the fringe of Japanese society – many of them in psychiatric institutions – have each created, through their art, an individual world of their own, characterised by great aesthetic intensity. The paintings and graphics, sculptures and objects of these artists are presented together with documentary films that convey an impression of their lives, their particular circumstances and their ways of working.
