Monteverdi: Vespro della Beata Vergine UNITED STATES NEW YORK • Park Avenue Christian Church • Ongoing
The Clarion Music Society marks the 400th anniversary of Claudio Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine. Written in Mantua for Pope Paul V, the Vespers was constructed as a musical portfolio to demonstrate Monteverdi’s mastery of myriad styles of church music, from antique polyphony to more modern techniques of word painting that were developed in his earlier madrigals. The setting of sensual texts from the Song of Solomon shows Monteverdi’s brilliance as a composer of monody.
