The Subterranean Rhythm & Blues Festival (STRAB) began in 2003 as a birthday celebration among scuba diving friends. Since then it has grown to an annual event with up to 18 bands performing during the weekend. The proceeds of the festival go to the charity, Church of Mozambique Orphanage.
According to the organizers, the STRAB festival and its beach location "will always remain an exlcusive event" as the venue, Ponta Malongane, can only cater for a total of 630 people, and therefore, "does not allow for thousands of people to flock to Malongane."
The 2010 edition features The Black Cat Bones, reggae band Tidal Waves, The Nic Dinnie Trio, Stefan Dixon, Hoot’n Anny, Southern Gypsey Queen, The Eric Clapton “Slowhand” Tribute Band, The Oh So Serious, Gerald Clark and Friends, Gents Of Leisure, Peter Mitchel, Mazaru, No One’s Arc, Death Valley Blues Band among others
