The Delft School is best known for its quiet images of domestic life by Johannes Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch. These and other Delft artists painted views of the households, courtyards, church interiors, streets, and squares of Delft during the 1650s and 1660s. This major international loan exhibition features 13 paintings by Vermeer and 11 by De Hooch. They are on view with almost 50 works by some of Delft’s most accomplished painters, such as Gerard Houckgeest’s luminous church interiors, the elegant portraits of Michiel van Mierevelt, Paulus Potter’s landscapes, Leonaert Bramer’s interpretations of biblical stories and the flower still lifes by Balthasar van der Ast. In addition, there are smaller selections of tapestries, gilded silver, and Delftware faience. This summer blockbuster in London follows the spring presentation at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York where 15 Vermeers were on view. Advance Tickets.
