Travel Tip: Pop Culture and Cinema in United States Charles Bradley and The Menahan Street Band
Charles Bradley and The Menahan Street Band UNITED STATES LOS ANGELES • Royce Hall • 29 November 2012
The 60-something brilliant soul singer Charles Bradley was discovered late in a very difficult life. Spurred by a little singing experience from his youth and a natural affinity for soul music, in the mid-’90s Bradley began performing around Brooklyn (where he had moved to help his ailing mother) as “Black Velvet,” a James Brown impersonator. A fateful encounter with the soul revivalists of Daptone Records (known for their work with Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones) transported Bradley from an uncertain future as a local curiosity.
Bradley is backed by the deep-funk of the Menahan Street Band (who open the show with an all-instrumental set), the “Screaming Eagle of Soul” in action will move you to the core.
Menahan Street Band’s new album The Crossing was released at the end of October 2012 from Daptone Records.
