French Song Series: Masques et Bergamasques
In this concert, the second in Graham Johnsonís French Song Series, the pursuits of the idle rich, so ardently cultivated by French aristocrats in the decades before the Revolution, are recalled in Debussyís youthful first book of FÍtes galantes, erotically charged settings of verse by Paul Verlaine.
The symbolist poetís English years, chiefly spent as a school-teacher in Lincolnshire, were prefaced by a spell in prison following his drunken attempt to shoot fellow author and libertine Arthur Rimbaud.
