The final stop after San Frnacisco, Montreal and Dallas, the first international exhibition devoted to French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier, who launched his first prêt-à-porter collection in 1976 and founded his own couture house in 1997, arrives in San Francisco. Dubbed fashion's enfant terrible by the press from the time of his first runway shows in the 1970s, Jean Paul Gaultier is one of the most important fashion designers of recent decades. The show features 140 ensembles and numerous documents, is particularly innovative in the theatrical mise en scène and multimedia approach provided by UBU/Compagnie de création's animated mannequins.
The openly gay Gaultier uses his designs to tackle gender and transgender issues through androgynous, gender-bending styles, meanwhile delving even further into some of the darker areas of the sexual revolution. Always provocative, he addresses issues of multiculturalism by bringing ethnic diversity to the Paris runway.
