NEW YORK  •  Whitney Museum of American Art  •  31 October 2013 - 2 February 2014

This exhibition explores a period of downtown performance activity in New York City during the 1970s and early 80s. Featuring approximately twenty artists, it showcases works created in alternative spaces—lofts, storefronts, and city streets—that expressed the radical potential for theater and art performance as a new formal language and means of artistic expression. Through installations of sets and environments, objects, video documentation, photography, ephemera, and live performances, Rituals of Rented Island situates these artists in a historical and societal context, and asserts their relevance for today’s emerging artists. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue with contributions by curator Jay Sanders and noted film critic J. Hoberman. Curated by Jay Sanders, the Whitney’s Curator and Curator of Performance.
