The exploitation of Congo’s vast mineral wealth was the cornerstone of the colonisation project under Belgium's King Leopold II. Some 10 million people died during the Belgian ruler's administration of Congo where racial distinctions and class segregation formed the foundations of colonial society. This controversial exhibition spans the period from the little-documented period before the arrival of the Belgians, notably archaeological sites and kingdoms inland from the Atlantic coastal area, through the "Leopoldian" regime, the development of the colony by the Belgian authorities after 1908, then the abrupt decolonisation process of the late 1950s and the emergence of the State of Zaire.
